In ‘Love and Honour’Honour, the author developed the main character throughout the story. Nam, who is an author, is a young Vietnamese-Australian writer who is in his “last year at the Iowa Writers’ Workshop” (p 4). At the point when a man who havehas such a horrifying past, his dad, came to visit, Nam’s writing and feeling of self are significantly changed (Le). The narrator’s connection with his ethnicity is unsure to the moment where his friend said, “you [Nam] could totally exploit the Vietnamese thing” (p 9). A literary agent and a writing instructor mentionmentioned that “ethnic literature is hot and important and ask yourself, what makes you stand out?... your background and life experience” (p 8). Nam werewas suggested to write what he already knows, such as his experience as an emigrant. thereforeTherefore, the story will be genuine and authentic. On the other side, the narrator’s friend disagrees with the idea of ethnic lit. He says that “it’s full of description of exotic food, you. You can’t tell if the language is spare because the author intended that way, or because he didn’t have the vocab” (p 8). He also says that “the characters are always flat” (p 8) and “as long as there’s an interesting image or metaphor once in every this much text...” (p 9). By his friend saying all of these things, it makes Nam more puzzled of finding his true identity as a second-generation immigrant. Nam was compromisecompromised in writing an ‘ethnic story’ from the start, yet he later understood that not everything can be expressed in words (Sato). Nam finds it difficult for him to connect with the Vietnamese culture, hence he has a complex relationship, and it is “explored through a multilayered consciousness” (Sato).
