In the 1800s, doctors had the super dumb idea that the body had a limited amount of "nerve force," twhatich was spendt during mind work and regenerated with exercise. Physically inactive people who did a lot of mind work used too much nerve force and you became neurasthenic, with symptoms similar to those of modern stress.
