In what is now part of television legend, the Simpson family first appeared on The Tracey Ullman Show in 1987, in a series of short fillers created by Matt Groening. Mr. Groening named the characters after the members of his own family, but substituted Bart for his own name. These short fillers of one minute each appeared for three seasons of The Tracey Ullman Show, until Mr Groening was offered an independent series for his characters.
