For more than three decades, there have been numerous works on the pronoun interpretation. However, much less attention has been paid to the null pronoun resolution while most of the studies have explored the resolution of overt pronouns. The exact nature of the null pronoun resolution is not well understood compared to the overt pronouns. To be specific, a majority of the null pronoun studies have focused on the only one of the heuristic strategies – the subject preference – and very few studies have investigated how the coherence relations would guide the interpretation of the null pronouns. Thus, it is not clear whether the underlying mechanism of the null pronouns resolution is governed by the heuristics-based approach or the coherence relation approach and, moreover, factors other than the syntactic position could affect the coreferential process.
