EFFECTS OF FLIPPED CLASSROOM ON IMPROVING PRIMARY HEALTHCARE PROVIDER’S CAPACITY OF MANAGING HYPERTENSION IN THUAN AN TOWN, BINH DUONG PROVINCE

Background: Hypertension is among the most prevalent non-communicable diseases in Viet Nam. A new competency-based hypertension management training program, which applies the flipped classroom model, has been used for primary healthcare workers in Binh Duong Province.
Objectives: To evaluate the effects of applying the flipped classroom model on improving primary healthcare providers’ capacity of managing hypertension in Thuan An Town, Binh Duong Province.
Materials and methods: A quasi-experimental study was conducted on 39 primary healthcare workers in Thuan An Town, Binh Duong Province (20 providers in the intervention group and 20 providers in the control group).
Results: At six months after training, the average knowledge score in the intervention group increased by 1.9 points (p < 0.001). Compared to the control group, the intervention group showed significant progress in the skills of checking the patient's blood pressures (p=0,047), appointing appropriate laboratory tests (p=0,002), notifying the target blood pressures (p=0,030), giving guidance on non-pharmacological treatment (p=0,010), checking the adherence to non-pharmacological treatment (p=0,010) and praising patients whenever they made efforts (p=0,002). There were no statistically significant differences in the average number of patients with hypertension per month and the percentage of patients with hypertension reaching the goal between the intervention group and the control group.
Conclusion: The flipped classroom training program is effective for improving the knowledge and skills of primary healthcare workers in the management of hypertension.
